New: Clarins Ombre Matte

The Clarins Ombre Matte are a new product to me and I am really liking this range of wearable cream eyeshadows.

I am no stranger to cream eyeshadows, but it is true that these are something special, not only for the matte finish that is not very frequent, but for their formula as well that is less creamy and more powdery than other offerings.

Clarins launched six shades in Autumn 2014 of which I have five as I did not get the nude pink one. I already have MAC’s Painterly Paint Pot and I can only wear it in winter when my yellow tones are less apparent, so I did not bother trying to make that one work.

The eyeshadows come in a durable plastic jar with a shiny golden lid. Very sleek! This is an advantage as they do not weight as much as say the Paint Pots if you carry them in your make up bag.

Despite being called Ombre Matte, there are five matte eyeshadows and a shimmery one.

The shades I got are:

  • 01 Nude Beige, is a light yellow based beige.
  • 03 Taupe, is a slightly mauve taupe that leans grey
  • 04 Rosewood, is a very pretty warm mauve.
  • 05 Sparkle Grey, is a medium shimmery grey with a warm base
  • 06 Earth, is a red based intense brown.

In the picture above you can see the four matte shades.

Unfortunately, my photographs are all slightly warmer in tone due to the sunset light.

Above you can see the shimmery shade in the range.

The only concern I have with these is that as they are very very powdery creams, from the few times that I have used them, it seems as if they might be prone to forming that oil sheen that you typicaly see on shadows testers in stores due to multiple people swatching with their fingers and leaving their skin oils on them. The surface of my 01 Nude Beige looks a bit shiny that way already. So although you can apply them with fingers, I would recommend using brushes.

Despite that minor adjustment in application, I really like the formula of them and the shades offered. Plus, they cost me 2€ less than MAC’s Paint Pots!

    1. In winter I have no trouble with them, but in summer I sometimes wear them with a primer underneath and set with translucent powder. That usually does the trick!
