In a recent visit to my Mac store, I went in with a plan and I stuck to it, which is always a good thing when you are confronted with plenty of pretty things.

This summer I attended a Mac Masterclass where the latest summer trends were shown. During the session, I explained my eternal problem with trying to find a foundation that I like and that my skin likes as well and the MUA suggested I try their tinted moisturizer, the Studio Mositure Tint. I have really enjoyed it, but it soon became apparent that Medium dark was not my shade even in summer (I’m NC20 in summer). So the first point in my attack plan was to get the tinted moisturizer in Light so I can mix them and adapt it to my current skin tone.

Spotlight on: my depoted Mineralize products

As part of the decluttering project I am carrying out, I decided to depot my mineralize products. As was the case with my regular eyeshadows and blushes, trying to find a specific shade was time consuming and the products ended not being used as much.

Also, in the case of the Mineralize Eyeshadows, I don’t like the product so far, so by depoting them and keeping them visible I am trying to force myself to use them.

The only products I have not depoted are my Minerlize Skinfinishes, as I would simply need several palettes to contain them!

As the Mineralize products are dome shaped as opposed to the flat surface of regular formulas, I had to buy a Z-palette high enough that could contain them, the Dome Palette.

Spotlight on: Chanel Le Blanc

 The best method that I know not to spend money is to not enter a shop, otherwise it happends that I go back home with a little treasure. This is how my story with Le Blanc de Chanel started.

I had seen this product on a few blogs but thought “I am pale, but I am not sure that I could wear a white base!”. Fool that I am, when I spotted it at a local store, I simply had to try it.

New: Kiko purchases

I recently stopped by Kiko and could not resist going home with two new little treasures.

On one hand I got my hands on the beautiful Luscious Cream Lipstick in 524 Taupe (6.90€ for 3.5g). This is a step outside my comfort zone as I have been staying away from anything brownish. Everytime I saw this lipstick at the store I wondered how one could pull it off without looking clownish or like the walking dead. Well after seeing the fantastic Linda Halberg pull of plenty of cooled browns and taupes recently, I thought why not?

 For some reason I am really really drawn to intense blues and teals despite not wearing them as often as other colours. You may have noticed that in my recent post about my colour eyeshadows.

I have had MAC’s Parrot for some time now, as I acquired it when it was repromoted with the Art of the Eye collection during summer 2013 but Make Up Store’s Buzzer is a more recent addition.

Disapointment: My country’s Make Up Store’s Pro Store’s customer service

As someone who has worked in retail, I am a firm believer that the way to fidelize your customers is to give them something that makes a difference.

There are stores much like Zara that rely on overwhelming the customer with plenty of choices and a reasonable or cheap price. Other stores can’t compete with this strategy and opt for a better and more personalized customer service.

I have been shopping at my MUS store since they opened their doors and their products are second in number in my stash only after MAC. I have seen their evolution and many a sales assistant come and go. The sales assistants have mostly been friendly and helpful but with some I developed a closer and warmer relationship, while still retaining our roles as customer and employee. We live in a small sized town after all, and people get to know each other. And after this long shared history, today they made me feel like a mere number.

I was interested in some of their Cybershadows, and, before going to the store, I checked out their website to know the shades available and prices. Surprise! Some of their shades were on a 30% off. Hurray! I went to the store and purchased my items while chatting with the sales assistants (“Oh, I’ve seen pictures of the new packaging” “Yeah it is very nice. And they are also launching new and better brushes” “Sounds like I’ll have to check them out!”). So imagine my surprise when as I was once more on the street, I look at my receipt and I see all the items at full price on it!

I went back and asked for a refund. At first they were reticent, telling me that those offers were only available online (a lie, when I have had the discounts applied in store before) but as I would not budge they gave it back to me in the end. The price difference? 15€.

I could not care less about those 15€. Hell, last week I spent quite a bit on brushes alone (Wayne Goss and Laura Mercier), but I refuse to let them get away with it. If I frequent a store it is because I like the relationship you develop with the staff, being able to share the excitement for upcoming releases and being able to check the items in person before you purchase them. If I get none of the perks and on top of that I feel like they are ripping me off, then I am afraid that the store has lost a customer. They can try to give me whatever excuse about “the system” and “orders from Stockholm”, but the truth is that my value as a loyal customer was diminished when confronted with potential face-less online customers. Cashing 15€ was more important than a loyal customer. Why should I be less?

I still like the brand, but from now onwards I will be very selective on whether I buy an item and if at all possible, on WHERE I buy it.

New: Wayne Goss’ The Collection and the Holiday Brush

Yes, I am in love today, as the song by The Cure says, as I’ve had a couple days to play with my Wayne Goss brushes and they must be one of the best purchases I’ve ever made! I’m even going to go as far as confessing to doing my face more than once in a day just so I could use them again.

Why have I bought so many low and medium quality brushes? Why have I wasted so much money instead of simply buying the quality brushes I’ve always longed for for starters? Who knows, but not I’ve seen the error of my ways.

So, once I breathed deeply and knew that I was really going to do this, the little devil on my shoulder said “Why buy only the Holiday Brush when you’ve always wanted The Collection? And look! They are offering free shipping!”. So yeah, I caved and took the plunge. Now I am the enraptured owner of these nine gorgeous brushes that feel like a dream and perform effortlessly.
